Her treatments left her very thin, weak and unable to maintain any kind of healthy active routine.  She began taking barre classes and somehow the movement, pace and concept allowed her to find a new strength and vitality.

Tuni Deignan teaches barre at Chagrin Yoga, located at 524 E. Washington Street in Chagrin Falls, and has led hundreds of students from the ages of 12 through 80.  This past year, a woman in her 40s, just 6 months in remission from cancer, joined a barre class and opened Deignan’s eyes as to how deeply the technique could impact lives.  “Barre allowed her a new found appreciation of what her body can do and has given her confidence,” said Deignan.  “It completely transformed her relationship with her body.”

Barre: a technique as old as time kept alive in principle and technique by teachers worldwide.  This non-impact total body workout emphasizes core stability and strengthening throughout every movement.  The barre technique benefits people of all ages and fitness levels.

Combining the structure of a ballet barre with calisthenics, Pilates and yoga, barre guides its participants to appreciate proper body mechanics that can then become a way of life outside of the classroom.

Witnessing how barre empowers women through mindful movement to embrace their bodies and, in turn, themselves, Deignan has become involved with Bright Pink.  This national non-profit organization focuses on the prevention and early detection of breast and ovarian cancer in young women, while providing support for high-risk individuals.

“At the heart of the matter, this organization celebrates women and is focused on empowering women through education,” said Deignan.  “I feel the barre technique does just that.”

bright-pinkDeignan has created a fundraising team in support of FabFest, a unique health and wellness event at the Cleveland Marriott Downtown at Key Center on September 28, 2014.  She is looking for fellow Chagrin Yoga Barre enthusiasts to join her team in support of Bright Pink.  Every dollar raised for FabFest will help fuel Bright Pink’s life-saving mission, allowing them to reach thousands, and eventually millions, of women nationwide with critical education and support.

You, too, can experience the effect of Barre.  On Saturday, August 2 from 1:30 – 2:45 p.m. Chagrin Yoga will hold a Barre Basic Workshop.  Bring yourself, a friend, your mat and water.  The cost of this potentially life-changing workshop is a simple donation, which will benefit Bright Pink.
